Fine Hotels and Wonderful Visits
Rome was probably founded around 800bc, according to Livy, the historian. The Etruscan dynasty controlled the area until is’ decline 509bc, when the aristocratic coup overthrew the monarchy, and the republic was founded. First century Rome was dominated by a struggle between the lower classes (Plebeians) and the leading families (Patricians). By the end of the 5th century, the senate had codified the law and granted the plebeians their own representatives in their area (tribunes). The extension of rights to the plebeians helped to build a community of interest between the classes that sustained the republic through many of it wars and crises.
Around 400bc, the Gauls crossed the Alps and made extensive settlements in the Po valley, a threat to city state area of Rome and the Etruscans. The Latins lived in an area southwest of Rome thus their alignment with the Etruscans was weakened. 340-338bc, Rome conquered the Etruscans and the Latins. Colonies of Roman citizens colonized the areas and kept the peace. With peace and loyalty, the Etruscans and the Latins were granted partial to full Roman citizenship to become part of the Republic. The threat from the Greeks was looming when King Pyrrhus attempted to invade Italy, 280bc. After a hard-fought battle, the king’s losses were so great that he remarked after the fighting was over that few more victories like this would lose all wars. Pyrrhus (Pyrrhus victory) withdrew, and Rome was now the Mediterranean power to take on Hannibal and the North African area of Tunisia of which Rome won the final Punic war and now the Mediterranean is the Roman.
